Ordinary Things That Pilots Cannot Do In The Cockpit

Airline pilots have lots of perks, like an amazing office view, an opportunity to see the planet from an altitude above 30,000 feet, and every ones respect and admiration. But there are some innocent things that pilots cannot enjoy while at work. So let's have a look at the list of ordinary things that pilots are not allowed to do while flying a plane.

Starting with number 1, No Beard.
Most commercial airline pilots can only wear a mustache.  This is for safety reasons, like if there is an in flight emergency, a beard may prevent an oxygen mask from fitting properly and pilots will have problems with breathing. Not all airlines apply the no facial hair rule. Many don't mind pilots having a neatly trimmed beard.

2, No Coffee For Airbus 350 pilots or any other drinks.
Spilling liquids on delicate electronics instruments have already lead to a lot of mid flight accidents. Since recently cockpits have become liquid free zones in these types of aircraft. If a pilot wants to drink tea, coffee or whatever he needs to go elsewhere.

3, No more than 8 working hours at night and 9 during the day.
That's why pilots are legally allowed to have a rest during long haul flights. But you don't need to worry there are always two pilots in the cockpit, and if one of them wants to have a nap there's always an extra one to replace them.

4, No chit chat below 10,000 Feet.
Most plane accidents happen below this altitude. That's why a sterile cockpit rule applies, which prohibits the pilot from doing anything else other than controlling the flight until it climbs to a higher altitude. Unnecessary activities include having a chit chat with your colleague.

5, No listening to music or radio.
While the minds occupied with music a pilot may get distracted and the consequences can be very unpleasant. Some pilots admit that they sometimes use their headset to tuning into music at particular flight stages. When a flights delayed and they have no passengers on board, and the plane has to wait on the ground for a couple of hours and pilots can also put some music on in the cockpit.

6, No food choice.
If you need to have your favorite food in the cabin, you need to be fast to claim it. Pilots have to eat different meals, again for safety reasons, imagine if both eats the same food and unfortunately they get food poisoning and being unable to fly a plane... Sounds scary !!

7, No choosing their partner.
Pilots rarely know who they are going to fly with until they take their place in the cockpit. they are also not allowed to refuse their assigned colleague whatever the issue might be.

8, No Reading Books.
Unfortunately finishing an exciting novel in mid flight is out for a pilot, books are considered too distracting. At the same time it's okay to look through a newspaper, it has got only short articles which doesn't really distract the pilot much.

9, No gadgets at any time during the flight.
"Please turn off your electronic devices or switch them to flight mode".. Most passenger know this phrase, but what they might not know is that this is applicable to pilots too. The only difference is that there's no flight mode for them, every electronic devices should be turned off, as nothing should distract them.

10, Follow the two man rule.
This means that there should be at least two people at the cockpit all time. If any of the pilot need to use the bathroom, drink some water or stretch their legs, a flight attendant should be in the cockpit. It's a strictly regulated procedure. Pilot's open the door and let a crew member in and they immediately lock it, after that it's unlocked for the pilot to go out and then the entire process is repeated.

11, No Landing And Going Home.
Pilots are usually the first to board the plane and the last to leave it. Before the trip they have pre flight checks to a do and similarly after the trip they have post flight checks to do.

12, No Napping Whenever You Want.
It's strictly prohibited for both the pilots to have a power nap at the same time and it makes sense. Every modern flight has an autopilot but pilots still do the biggest part of the job. That's why at least one of them has to be alert and be able to control at all flight stages. By the way if one pilot id=s about to doze off they have to make sure their partner is awake glancing at the colleague isn't enough their should be verbal confirmation.

13, No Passenger Visits.
their used to times where the passengers could visit the cockpit if they ask for. But now the regulations doesn't allow pilots to have non crew members in the cockpit. But not only pilots have to follow strict regulations, the flight attendants also have many.  For example flight attendants are not allowed to eat in front of the passengers, every time a flight attendant feels an urge to munch on something they have to hide in the galley. They can't bring anything onboard anything they want. Just like passengers, flight attendants need to leave out anything that doesn't go through the security check. Flight attendants cannot move i and out of the cockpit whenever they want. for security reasons they have to follow a strict procedure before visiting the pilots
